The canal closes for the season

The navigation season on the Erie Canal starts on May 15th and ends on October 14th. Sometime during the first two weeks of December the canal will be drained. Not many barges pass through Spencerport anymore, but recreational boats do. 331 in fact! That number of boats was recorded to have passed through Spencerport by the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum. That’s only what the museum recorded. Many more boats passed through Spencerport this season. The residents of Spencerport know this because they have to wait in traffic for the lift bridge to go up and down. It’s a small price to pay for having a picturesque village.
