The Big Ditch Day at the Canal Museum schedule
From the director of the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum:
On Saturday October 11, the Depot will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Erie Canal with a 4-hour event called The Big Ditch Day. This is also I LOVE NY’s Fall Path Through History Weekend and The Big Ditch Day will be advertised through their channels.
There will be multiple activities happening between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm at the Depot, along the canal path, and at Heritage Park. The scheduled events are:
11:00 am at Heritage Park – 19th Century Base Ball Game with teams from Genesee Country Village – observers should bring lawn chairs. This is the ONLY event that will take place at the park. Parking at Heritage Park.
11:00 am – Noon at the Depot - Music on the Porch with Jim Morgan
Noon – 1:00 pm at the Depot – Children’s Storytime and activities with Miss Bridget from the Library on the porch and the front lawn.
1:00 – 2:30 pm at the Depot – The Biscuit Brothers Slightly Crooked, Big-Hearted Salute to the Erie Canal music and comedy on the Porch
11:00 am – 3:00 pm along the canal path
36 Informational posters installed along the path featuring historical information about Spencerport and the Erie Canal.
· Town and Village Historians showcasing historic artifacts that exemplify the history of Spencerport (located in the grassy circle on the path between the Depot & the Park).
· Rochester Arc & Flame Blacksmithing Demonstration (grassy circle)
· Colby Farms Oxen Team (they may be at the Depot depending on how far they need to be from the blacksmithing demo).
11:00 am – 3:00 pm at the Depot
· Museum exhibits and Gift Shop open
· Activity table with button-making, rock painting, and temporary tattoos (1st 100 visitors for the tattoos)
· Selfie-station with Charles the Mule
· Canal boat Owasco will be docked in front of the Depot and the owners will be available for tours of their boat and to answer questions.
